Vilanculos Beach Lodge is situated in the small coastal town of Vilankulo, in the subtropical province of Inhambane, Mozambique.Vilankulo lies 780km north of Maputo and 500km south of Beira and is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. Named after a local tribal chief Gamala Vilankulo Mukoke, the town itself is only about 5kms long and filled with all the amenities, lively atmosphere and friendly people needed to make your visit comfortable with a local experience. The newly built international airport is based on the outskirts of the town with flights arriving and departing from Maputo, Johannesburg and Nelspruiton a daily basis. The Bazaruto Archipelago, a chain of islands strung out like a pearl necklace, is a protected National Marine Reserve (declared so in 1971) that lies parallel to the historical Mozambican channel. The archipelago consists of five islands; Bazaruto,Benguerra, Margaruque, Banque and Santa Carolina also known as Paradise Island. These islands have a history that reaches way back, once named the Hucicas or Vacicas, the islands were long famed for their pearl and ambergris trade. By the 15th century these islands were the site for a thriving maritime community supported by an ever increasing dhow trade. The archipelago stretches southwards from the largest island Bazaruto, which gives the chain its name, the once popular Santa Carolina lying to its west. Below the southern tip of Bazaruto is Benguerra, followed by Margaruque and the tiny island of Banque. The islands are a true barefoot paradise, pristine and undeveloped, offering unspoiled coral pink beaches, world class deep sea fishing, salt water fly fishing, exceptional scuba diving and astounding snorkelling. Vilanculos Beach Lodge is the idyllic location and picture-perfect setting for that family vacation, wedding, honeymoon, conference or reality check from the humdrum of everyday life. |
